Tips for Practicing Yoga at Home
There are many creative ways to build and develop a sustainable yoga practice. The most common method being purchasing a monthly or yearly membership at your favorite local yoga studio. But what about practicing yoga at home?
There are many virtual memberships out there to choose from. Everything from free Youtube yoga classes to online-only studios. Even in-person studios typically offer virtual or live online classes.
The point being, in order to build an at-home yoga practice that you enjoy, there are a number of ways we can spice up our home studio or practice space. Below are some of our favorite tips.
Invest in a solid sound setup
When Keirsten and I practice at home, getting a solid sound setup elevates the entire experience. Think about your favorite local studio. They usually have the best sound systems.
We like to connect the device that is streaming the virtual class to a bluetooth speaker. It makes the space feel like you are practicing in person! Next, if we are feeling music, we connect a second bluetooth speaker to one of our iPhones and stream our favorite Spotify list. You can find Keirsten’s public playlists here.
Investing in a proper sound setup can really enhance the dynamic of your at-home yoga practice.
Create a routine
Like many of our habits, the new ones always seem to stick around when you can add them into an existing routine. This is known as habit-stacking. One of our favorite routines is to spend Saturday and/or Sunday mornings practicing the latest class of Afternoon Yoga Online.
Whether you’re a morning person or a night owl, block off 30-60 minutes for some time on your mat. For the night owls out there, a gentle Yin or Yoga Nidra class is a great way to prepare the body and mind for a restful night’s sleep.

Don’t forget the props
The intention of building at at-home yoga practice should be to closely mirror that of your favorite studio experience. Props are an important yet often forgotten part of building a sustainable yoga practice at home!
There are a number of places online to order these items. We recommend at the very least having a few bolsters, blocks and blankets for your space at home.
Set the energy of the space
Setting the right energy for the space makes a huge difference! One way of doing this is to incorporate your favorite incense before or while you practice. Are you going for a more calming, nurturing flow or are you looking to build strength and heat? Whatever your intention is for coming back to your mat, match that intention with the same energy.
Invite your furry friends
Our pup Otto loves to join us when we practice at home. He certainly adds to the relaxing vibes when he’s laying next to our mats.
These are just a few ways that we spice up our at-home yoga practice. Practicing at home doesn’t have to be boring. It shouldn’t feel like another task for your day. It should be time that you enjoy and crave coming back to when you need it.
